Schools Regatta

The annual Irish Schools Regatta was held at O’Briens Bridge on Sunday 24th April. There were entries from 71 schools from all over Ireland. The crews attending experienced fine conditions which lead to magnificent racing.

The overall winning school on Sunday was St Joseph’s School (Bish) from Galway who took home the Victor Ludrum schools trophy on Sunday night. Laurel Hill was best of the Limerick Schools with a creditable 9th place finish out of the 71 schools represented.

Laurel Hill Secondary School and Laurel Hill Colaiste had 17 crews on the water that day, from 8’s, quads, doubles and a single scull. Their racing prowess over the day did their schools proud with their excellent result.

There are over 38 girls rowing in the school at present and they love it. Ask any of them about this wonderful sport and they will tell you. There are four local clubs that are always looking for members, St Michaels Rowing Club, Shannon Rowing Club, Athlunkard Boat Club and Castleconnell Rowing Club.

The season doesn’t finish here, most of these girls will attend at least 5 other regattas between now and mid July when they will attend The National Rowing Championships in the National Rowing Centre over a 3 day regatta in Cork.
