21st April, 2020
We trust you are all keeping well in these very challenging times.
Following the recent announcement by the Minister for Education to defer the Leaving Certificate to July or early August and his proposal to hold the Junior Certificate in September we are making the following suggestions.
We encourage sixth-year students to continue with their studies and revision under the guidance and support of their teachers until 29th May. We await further direction and clarification from the Department of Education for the summer period.
We propose that Junior Certificate students will complete three assignments/tests/projects for the remainder of this term and be awarded a grade by their teachers and reported in June to you. We believe this approach is in the best interest of student’s wellbeing and will enable them to focus and engage for their final six weeks of this school term. It is not our intension to have students sitting a exam in September after a three month holiday break. The stress and anxiety that this would cause is not in their best interest. However, we will continue to assess these students during their time in Transition Year so that they will be placed in the correct classes appropriate to their ability and interests going into 5th year.
Finally, we propose the following plan for 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th year students.
- 20th April to 1st May
To continue with new course work through online learning
- May 4th to May 15th
Revision and assignments online
- May 18th to May 29th
Summer house exams as per timetable over 2/3 class periods
We realise this is a very demanding and stressful time for all of you and we wish to reassure you that we are available together with the teachers to support, encourage and motivate the students of Laurel Hill Secondary School FCJ in the time ahead.
